Excessive Force, Evidence Falsification

The use of excessive force by officers in New London has been a persistent problem, resulting in serious injuries to suspects. Similarly, the falsification of evidence by police leaders, including former Captain Brian Wright, has also been alleged in multiple cases, with officers justifying warrantless entries by making up and writing what they would need witnesses to claim, using photocopied witness signatures to finalize such fabrications and even getting caught on NLPD cruiser video planting drugs on a resident during a traffic stop. These examples of unwritten policing practices in New London, CT not only violate the law, but also undermine the integrity of the state's D.O.C. and criminal justice system itself.

Harassment by Police Officers

Accusations of harassment by police officers, such as sending sexually explicit/harassing messages to a male subordinate or female resident, further erode public trust in law enforcement. Such behavior is unacceptable and undermines the authority of law enforcement.

Immediate Intervention and Policing Practice Reform

Immediate intervention and policing practice reform are necessary to ensure that officers are held accountable and operate with integrity. Implementing policies that require officers to break away from the policing practices they know and to report suspicious activity and undergo regular training on ethical conduct, can help. Independent review boards made up of members of the New London Public Police Oversight Committee must at last have the authority to subpoena records needed and investigate civilian complaints of misconduct while practicing regular community outreach and engagement can foster trust between the police and the community.

  1. The falsification or fabrication of evidence is a serios crime if committed by police personnel. This post calls most policing practices in New London, CT into question.

    1. I agree with your comment. Quality of life suffers worst when a policing policy openly defies or violates the law. Let me step back, it suffers worst, when residents feel disrespected, harmed or victimized. I was getting to the idea that these outcomes typically occur when police violate the rules and laws that they claim to enforce. It’s normal for people to do what they want within certain limits and normal for penalties to dissuade us from trying to cross those behavioral limits. The only two groups we can observe in American culture that regularly attempt to defy these limits are children and police. Thus, the majority of actual policing practices, meaning those one can observe here on the ground, remain unwritten in New London, CT.
