New London Police Chief and Mayor Passero Discuss Recent Shootings
Mayor Passero and Chief Wright address the recent reports of gunshots in New London, CT. The two reported incidents were both reported within about a mile of a New London public school.

Recent Instances of Gunshots Reported

New London — Police Chief Brian Wright revealed on Friday that law enforcement will join forces with state and local agencies to tackle a series of three shooting incidents that occurred within the city over the past three weeks.

According to an article in The Day, none of these episodes led to injuries. However, two of the events demanded schools to implement "secure building mode" due to their closeness to the shootings. While in this mode, schools prohibit individuals from entering or leaving the premises.

Instance 1: Ledge Road

The first instance of a shooting near a school took place on March 9 when authorities were informed of four youths discharging a firearm in a parking area near 80 Ledge Road, less than a mile from the city's high school campus.

Instance 2: Hempstead & Franklin

The second occurred on Wednesday morning as officers examined reports of a man firing shots at a vehicle in the vicinity of Hempstead and Franklin streets. Four nearby New London schools were instructed to maintain a secure status.

“Fortunately, no one was injured and we don’t take it for granted. We want to be proactive,” Wright said.

The city police's Investigative Services Division has assigned top priority to all three incidents for further investigation.

“Our citizens and visitors should not be subjected to such anxiety as they go about their daily lives and activities in our city,” Mayor Michael Passero said.

The announcement indicated that Passero has authorized Wright to utilize any necessary resources to address the shooting incidents in the city's neighborhoods, and “to identify and swiftly bring to justice these reckless individuals threatening the safety of our community.”

Individuals possessing information about these incidents are urged to contact the New London Police Department's Detective Bureau at 860-447-1481. Anonymous tips may be submitted through the New London Tips 411 system by texting NLPDTip along with the information to Tip411.

  1. I don’t think New London Police should be wearing guns. The track record shows we’d be safer if the guns and even the give-away police uniforms stayed safely back at the police station, We raise kids here. New Londoners do not need more guns in the street or people holding them wearing clown suits that tell criminals who to avoid.
